#SoCaltech: Martha Oropesa
“I started working at Caltech in 2003, and my favorite part is making the designs in the coffee. I like to make hearts. The students here are very sweet. I have made many friends, though I don't know all their names, just their faces. Some of them want to take a picture with me when they graduate—in their gowns and everything. Sometimes, the students come back to visit even after 10 years! They work for different companies or live in other countries, and when they come see me, I want to cry! I am so proud that they remember me. They say, ‘You're still here, Martha?’ and I say, ‘Yes!’ I know I don't speak English so well, but they understand me, and they laugh at my jokes and we are happy. I want the best for the students and my co-workers. I'm very happy working here and sad to be leaving, but I need to be at home to help my family. And really, I don't want to say goodbye.”
Martha Oropesa retires on February 25 after 18 years of service with Dining Services as a cashier/barista.
